HARVEST
Harvest commenced from our estate vineyard in Alexander Valley and from the vineyards in the Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Mendocino County from September 11 through October 13, 1999. Sugar average was 23.6° Brix, ideal for optimal balance of rich Chardonnay aromas and flavor, while still retaining natural acidity for freshness and a moderation of alcohol for balance. The pressed juice was redolent of fresh apple, and pear fruit.
WINEMAKING
Cool, handpicked grapes were barrel fermented in 100% French Oak (30% in new barrels). Partial malolactic fermentation imparted a creamy texture to the wine while still retaining much of its natural acidity. Extended sur lie contact added further depth and complexity. The wine remained in barrel for seven months prior to bottling and was aged for one year prior to release.
FINISHED WINE
The 2000 Chardonnay possesses a complex floral and mineral bouquet with bright notes of green apple, citrus, butter and toasted oak. On the palate, this wine is rich and vibrant with flavors that include fresh apple, pear and citrus, balanced with honey and a moderate amount of toasty oak and creamy lees character. This wine has a long, expansive finish that ends with just the right amount of acidity to make it an ideal compliment to many types of cuisine.
