HARVEST
Harvest commenced from vineyards in the Russian River Valley and Mendocino County from September 10 through September 28, 2002. Sugar average was 23.4 ° Brix, optimal for developing Chardonnay aroma and flavor while preserving the grape's natural acidity and moderate alcohol. The pressed juice was redolent of green apple and newly ripe pear.
WINEMAKING
Cool, handpicked grapes were barrel fermented in 100% French Oak (35% in new barrels). Partial malolactic fermentation allowed the wine to retain the natural crisp acidity of the Russian River Valley fruit. Extended sur lie contact added to further balance the natural acidity of the fruit with a creamy texture. The wine remained in barrel for five months prior to bottling and was aged for one year prior to release.
FINISHED WINE
In keeping with our classic Old-World style of Chardonnay, the 2002 vintage possesses a citrus and mineral bouquet that reveals notes of crisp green apple, kiwi, honey and lightly toasted oak. On the palate, the wine is lively and complex with flavors that include pear, fuji apple and limestone balanced with toasty oak. All of these refined flavors contribute to the balanced expression of fruit aroma, flavor and finish, making this the perfect complement to many types of cuisine.
