HARVEST
Harvest commenced from vineyards in the Russian River Valley and Mendocino County from September 8 through September 24, 2001. Sugar average was 23.2° Brix, optimal for developing Chardonnay aroma and flavor while preserving the grape's natural acidity and moderate alcohol. The pressed juice was redolent of green apple and newly ripe pear.
WINEMAKING
Cool, handpicked grapes were barrel fermented in 100% French Oak (35% in new barrels). Partial malolactic fermentation imparted a creamy texture to the wine while still retaining much of its natural acidity. Extended sur lie contact added further depth and complexity. The wine remained in barrel for five months prior to bottling and was aged for one year prior to release.
FINISHED WINE
In keeping with our classic Old-World style of Chardonnay, the 2001 vintage possesses a citrus and mineral bouquet that reveals notes of pear, green apple, melon, honey and lightly toasted oak. On the palate the wine is lively and complex with flavors that include pear, fresh apple, limestone and butterscotch balanced with toasty oak. It has a long, expansive finish that ends with just the right amount of acidity to make this the perfect complement to many types of cuisine.
